GTA 6 Netflix Preview Drove Over 100,000 Sign-Ups in Just Six Hours

GTA 6 Netflix Preview Drove Over 100,000 Sign-Ups in Just Six Hours

Rockstar Games' GTA 6 Extended Look reportedly generated more than 100,000 Netflix sign-ups in the United States during its six-hour exclusive window, making it one of the platform's biggest subscriber-driving events of the year.

According to new data from Ampere Analysis, the GTA 6 presentation resulted in Netflix's third-largest subscriber spike of 2026, behind only the final instalment of Stranger Things and the Rousey vs. Carano MMA fight.

The Extended Look debuted exclusively on Netflix on August 27, with viewers having to wait six hours before Rockstar released the presentation elsewhere. Despite that relatively short exclusivity period, Ampere says it was enough to encourage more than 100,000 people in the US to sign up for Netflix.

GTA 6 brought lapsed Netflix viewers back

The presentation also appears to have been particularly effective at bringing inactive subscribers back to the platform.

Ampere's data indicated that more than 5% of viewers who had not used Netflix during the previous 30 days returned specifically to watch the GTA 6 preview before going on to watch other content.

According to Ampere, that reactivation rate was higher than for any other film or television series measured on Netflix during the period.

"More than 100,000 sign-ups from a six-hour exclusive window shows the pulling power of a major gaming event."

Ampere senior research manager Louise Wooldridge said the event also demonstrated how Netflix could compete with platforms such as YouTube for the attention of gaming audiences.

"For Netflix, it also offers a way to compete with YouTube for gamer attention and to bring lapsed viewers back to the platform. For Rockstar, Netflix opens GTA 6 up to audiences beyond the franchise's traditional core."

31.1 million views in four days

The subscriber figures add to a growing collection of statistics showing the enormous impact of Rockstar's Netflix partnership.

The GTA 6 Extended Look reached 31.1 million views on Netflix within its first four days, making it the platform's most-viewed title of the week.

Sensor Tower data previously showed that US mobile viewership on Netflix increased by 35% hour-over-hour during the presentation, while traffic to Netflix's website increased by 125%.

The effect extended beyond Netflix itself. NielsenIQ reported that UK hardware sales increased significantly around the presentation, with PlayStation sales rising by 33% and Xbox sales by 34%.

Netflix sees an opportunity around major games

Ampere believes GTA 6 demonstrates how Netflix could become increasingly involved with major gaming franchises even without directly competing in the AAA console and PC games market.

Netflix's own gaming business remains largely focused on mobile titles, but exclusive trailers, reveals and adaptations could allow the company to attract audiences interested in some of the industry's biggest franchises.

Ampere senior research analyst Katie Holt said Netflix does not necessarily need to own major AAA games in order to benefit from the enormous interest surrounding them.

"Netflix may not be able to compete directly with the biggest AAA game franchises, but it can vie for the attention around them."

"Trailers, reveals, and adaptations give Netflix a way into gaming culture without owning the games themselves. GTA 6 is a particularly powerful example, given the scale of the franchise and the anticipation around its launch."

Ampere estimates Netflix will have almost 343 million subscribers worldwide by the end of 2026. Interestingly, around 16% of those subscribers are expected not to play games at all, suggesting the partnership may also have helped Rockstar expose GTA 6 to audiences outside its traditional gaming fanbase.

The latest figures reinforce just how successful Rockstar's unusual Netflix-first strategy appears to have been. A six-hour exclusivity window not only generated tens of millions of views, but also drove subscriptions, reactivated inactive viewers, increased Netflix traffic and coincided with substantial increases in console sales.
