GTA 6 Breaks Rockstar Tradition as Achievement List Remains Hidden Just Two Weeks Before Launch

With Grand Theft Auto VI now just two weeks away from its November 19, 2026 release, one important piece of information remains conspicuously absent: the game's achievements and trophies.

Historically, Rockstar Games achievement and trophy lists have frequently become public weeks before launch. Some were discovered through unofficial leaks, while others were deliberately published by Rockstar itself. These lists can reveal previously unknown gameplay features, activities, multiplayer details and even story spoilers.

We've looked back through almost two decades of Rockstar releases, from Bully and Grand Theft Auto IV to Red Dead Redemption 2 and Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, to establish when their achievements first became public.

With GTA VI scheduled for November 19, 2026, and only 14 days remaining as of November 5, its achievements have yet to appear in a verified public list. That is particularly unusual compared with several previous major Rockstar releases, although not every historical disclosure was a leak.

When Did Previous Rockstar Games' Achievements Become Public?

The table below compares the earliest publicly documented appearance of achievement or trophy lists with each game's original release date, whether the information was leaked or officially revealed. Where available, we've used contemporary reports published at the time rather than later retrospective articles.

It's important to distinguish between information that genuinely leaked and lists that Rockstar deliberately published before release.

Game First Reported Days Before Release Source Type
Bully: Scholarship Edition February 6, 2008 27 days Unofficial
Grand Theft Auto IV March 29, 2008 or earlier At least 31 days Unofficial
Midnight Club: Los Angeles Early October 2008 Approximately 17+ days Unofficial
GTA IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony October 5, 2009 24 days Pre-release publication
Red Dead Redemption March 29, 2010 50 days Officially revealed
L.A. Noire April 4, 2011 43 days Officially revealed
Max Payne 3 April 10, 2012 35 days Officially revealed
Grand Theft Auto V August 18, 2013 30 days Unofficial
Red Dead Redemption 2 October 11, 2018 15 days Unofficial
GTA: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition October 14, 2021 28 days Datamined

Note: Dates represent the earliest contemporary publications identified in this research, not necessarily the exact moment the data was first obtained. Some older releases have incomplete surviving records. Release comparisons use the original North American launch dates where applicable.

Grand Theft Auto IV – At Least 31 Days Before Release

Released on April 29, 2008, Grand Theft Auto IV was one of Rockstar's earliest major games to feature Xbox achievements from launch.

Its achievement information began circulating more than a month before release, initially with achievement names and subsequently with their descriptions and Gamerscore values.

On March 29, 2008, Engadget reported that users on Xbox360Achievements.org had obtained a detailed list, including requirements for completing missions, participating in activities and achieving multiplayer objectives.

The report specifically noted that the information had appeared in stages, meaning the earliest names-only leak actually predated March 29.

Some of the information circulating at the time was unreliable, however. A separate Engadget report published on March 30 included a questionable achievement that was not part of the final game.

By April 26, just three days before release, the official list of 50 achievements had been reported.

GTA IV's achievement information was therefore circulating at least 31 days before launch, although its exact first appearance may have been earlier.

Grand Theft Auto V – 30 Days Before Release

Grand Theft Auto V followed a remarkably similar pattern five years later.

On August 18, 2013, exactly 30 days before the game's September 17 release, GameSpot reported that the achievement list had appeared through Xbox360Achievements.org.

The discovery was subsequently covered by several other publications, including PlayStation Universe on August 19.

The list revealed numerous activities and collectibles, including spaceship parts, nuclear waste, stunt jumps, property ownership and stock market investments.

It also provided an early look at GTA Online's progression systems and activities, with achievements relating to multiplayer ranks, races, survival modes, crews and apartments.

Although much of the achievement information was publicly available, 11 secret achievements remained hidden, helping to protect some of the game's story details.

GTA V's achievement list appeared a full month before release, compared with just two weeks remaining for GTA VI today.

Red Dead Redemption 2 – 15 Days Before Release

Red Dead Redemption 2 provides one of the most interesting recent comparisons.

On October 11, 2018, just 15 days before the game's October 26 release, its PlayStation trophy list reportedly appeared online through PSNProfiles.

As PlayStationTrophies reported at the time, the information included a list of 52 trophies, with screenshots circulating online.

The leak attracted attention because it offered potential details about both the single-player campaign and the then-upcoming Red Dead Online multiplayer experience.

Unlike several earlier Rockstar releases, this was not an official Newswire announcement. It was reported as an unofficial disclosure, although the original method used to obtain the data was not conclusively established.

Red Dead Redemption 2's trophies had surfaced 15 days before launch, meaning GTA VI has now moved beyond that same point without a similarly verified public list.

GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition – 28 Days Before Release

Another particularly interesting example came in October 2021, when the achievements for Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City and San Andreas were discovered ahead of their remastered releases.

On October 14, Video Games Chronicle reported that GTAForums user alloc8or had shared achievement lists for all three games.

The information was reportedly obtained from Rockstar's own PC launcher infrastructure, rather than from retail copies of the games.

The lists included returning achievements alongside new objectives and references, offering an early glimpse at changes introduced for the Definitive Editions.

The collection eventually launched on November 11, 2021, placing the discovery 28 days before release.

This example is especially relevant because it demonstrates that achievement information can sometimes be discovered through Rockstar's digital infrastructure before a game becomes available to players.

Rockstar Has Also Officially Revealed Achievements Months Ahead of Launch

The unofficial leaks are only part of the story. Rockstar has sometimes published achievement and trophy lists on its own Newswire as part of pre-release promotion. In fact, the original Red Dead Redemption was revealed substantially earlier than its sequel.

Red Dead Redemption – 50 Days Before Release

The original Red Dead Redemption launched on May 18, 2010, but Rockstar Games had already officially revealed its achievements and trophies almost two months earlier.

On March 29, 2010, Rockstar published the Red Dead Redemption achievement and trophy list on its official Newswire, giving players an early look at the challenges awaiting them in the Wild West.

The list included objectives relating to story progression, exploration, hunting, multiplayer activities and various challenges throughout the game.

With the information appearing 50 days before launch, Red Dead Redemption has the longest confirmed pre-release lead time among the titles in this comparison.

Importantly, this was an official announcement rather than an unauthorised leak, demonstrating that Rockstar has previously been willing to publish this information itself as part of its pre-release promotional campaign.

L.A. Noire – 43 Days Before Release

L.A. Noire is another example of Rockstar publishing its achievements long before release.

Rockstar published the game's achievements and trophies on April 4, 2011, more than six weeks before its May 17 release.

The information appeared through Rockstar's Newswire, accompanied by screenshots and details about the game's investigations and progression.

At 43 days before launch, L.A. Noire had one of the longest confirmed lead times in our research, surpassed by the original Red Dead Redemption at 50 days.

Max Payne 3 – 35 Days Before Release

Rockstar continued this approach with Max Payne 3, officially revealing its achievements and trophies on April 10, 2012.

The original Rockstar Newswire announcement included the achievement list alongside new screenshots.

With the game launching on May 15, the information was public 35 days in advance.

These examples demonstrate that Rockstar has historically been comfortable revealing achievement information well before launch, although that approach has not been consistent across every release.

Achievement Lists Were Appearing Before GTA IV

Although GTA IV is a natural starting point for comparisons, Xbox achievements actually existed before its release.

Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis, released for Xbox 360 in May 2006, already supported achievements. However, we have not established a reliable date for when its complete achievement list first became public.

Another early example is Bully: Scholarship Edition, which launched on Xbox 360 in March 2008.

On February 6, 2008, French gaming website Factornews published details of its achievement list, 27 days before release.

Midnight Club: Los Angeles also had trophy information circulating before its October 2008 launch, although the exact earliest publication date remains uncertain.

The achievement lists for GTA IV's downloadable episodes, The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony, also appeared before their respective releases.

In fact, our own iGrandTheftAuto.com archives contain an article from October 5, 2009, documenting The Ballad of Gay Tony's achievements, 24 days before its October 29 launch.

GTA VI Has Now Passed the Previous Unofficial Leak Windows

As of November 5, 2026, GTA VI is scheduled to launch in just 14 days, and we have yet to identify a verified public release of its complete achievement or trophy list.

That puts it closer to launch without a verified public list than several of Rockstar's most notable previous releases, including both unofficial leaks and official reveals. Looking specifically at four major unofficial disclosures:

  • GTA IV: At least 31 days before release.
  • GTA V: 30 days before release.
  • Red Dead Redemption 2: 15 days before release.
  • GTA: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition: 28 days before release.

There are several possible explanations. Achievement data may not yet be publicly accessible through PlayStation or Xbox services, access may be more tightly controlled, or the information may simply not have been discovered by the people and websites that traditionally uncover it.

Additionally, the lack of a physical disc-based release for GTA VI could make it easier to lock down data to outside sources.

It's also important to remember that achievement lists can contain significant spoilers. Rockstar may have good reasons to keep GTA VI's story-related achievements hidden until much closer to release.

Research note: This comparison is based on surviving contemporary reports and the earliest publication dates we could substantiate. It is not an exhaustive audit of every Rockstar release or platform-specific reissue. We will update the article if earlier sources emerge.
