ZEIT Reveals More GTA 6 Details: Narrower Roads, Store Robberies & More

ZEIT has revealed more GTA 6 details, including 15% narrower roads, every store can be robbed, clothing affecting NPC reactions, packed streets, smarter police and deeper fitness systems.

Journalist Henrik Oerding visited Rockstar North in Edinburgh, where he watched Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look ahead of its release and then saw Head of Development Rob Nelson demonstrate almost an hour of GTA 6 live.

While several elements overlap with details revealed through other media previews, ZEIT's report provides some particularly specific new information about Vice City and how Rockstar wants the world to respond to the player.

Vice City's Roads Are 15% Narrower

Rockstar has already confirmed that Vice City itself is approximately twice the size of Los Santos in GTA V, but ZEIT provides an interesting additional detail about how the city has been designed.

According to Nelson, Vice City's roads are around 15% narrower than those in GTA V.

He explained that this helps make the already considerably larger city feel even bigger while players are travelling through it.

The narrower roads should also contribute to GTA 6's denser traffic and more confined driving conditions, particularly in the busiest parts of Vice City.

Vice City's Streets Are Packed With NPCs

One of the first things ZEIT noticed during the gameplay demonstration was how crowded the city appeared.

Cars filled the roads while large numbers of pedestrians moved along the pavements and beachfront, with the publication suggesting there appeared to be more people on screen than ever before in a Rockstar game.

The NPC population also displayed considerable variety, including different ages, body shapes, clothing styles and behaviours.

Examples witnessed during the demonstration included a woman picking up after her dog and an elderly man travelling through Vice City on an electric mobility scooter.

Your Clothes Affect How NPCs Treat You

Clothing in GTA 6 won't simply change Jason and Lucia's appearance.

Nelson explained that individual outfits are tagged in ways that allow NPCs to react differently depending on what the player is wearing.

During one example involving Lucia, an NPC made a comment about her appearance while she was wearing a particular outfit.

According to Nelson, dressing more stylishly or provocatively can result in additional comments from pedestrians, with the system applying to both playable characters.

NPCs React Differently When You Draw a Weapon

Pulling out a weapon in a crowded area doesn't cause every pedestrian to react in exactly the same way.

ZEIT witnessed Nelson draw a weapon while surrounded by pedestrians, causing the atmosphere around Jason to immediately change.

Depending on their individual personality, NPCs may retreat, become nervous or react aggressively.

Rockstar has written a huge amount of dialogue specifically for these small encounters, helping individual pedestrians react more naturally to unusual or threatening player behaviour.

Every Store Can Be Robbed

Perhaps one of the most significant details in ZEIT's report is that every store in GTA 6 can apparently be robbed.

Money plays a considerably larger role in GTA 6 than in previous games, with Rockstar encouraging players to engage with optional crimes and activities rather than relying entirely on rewards from the main storyline.

This means stores encountered naturally while exploring Leonida can potentially become robbery targets rather than only specific locations selected by the developers.

Robberies Can Happen Naturally in the Open World

During the demonstration, Nelson walked Jason into a small convenience store while carrying a weapon.

He took money from the cash register and knocked the store clerk unconscious without firing a shot.

The encounter was not presented as a conventional scripted mission, instead demonstrating how GTA 6 allows players to turn ordinary locations into criminal opportunities while exploring the world.

Nelson explained that players are criminals, but they don't necessarily have to approach every crime with maximum violence.

Witnesses and Security Cameras Can Identify You

The convenience store robbery also demonstrated how GTA 6's expanded police investigation system works.

After Jason left the store, a police broadcast provided his description, including details of the clothes he was wearing.

The police had not magically been given this information. A customer discovered the unconscious employee and reported the crime, while surveillance cameras had recorded Jason's appearance.

Nelson explained that destroying the security footage would have prevented police from knowing what Jason looked like.

You Only Receive a Wanted Level if Your Crime Is Witnessed

ZEIT provides another particularly important detail about GTA 6's redesigned wanted system.

A wanted level is only generated when a crime is actually witnessed or otherwise reported.

This fits with Rockstar's wider move away from the more automatic police responses seen in previous GTA games, where law enforcement could sometimes become aware of crimes without an obvious witness.

In GTA 6, witnesses, cameras and other sources of information instead contribute towards what the police know about the suspect.

Changing Clothes Can Help You Escape the Police

Clothing isn't only important for NPC reactions. It can also become part of escaping law enforcement.

During a later robbery, Lucia separated from Jason and hid from police in some bushes.

When she eventually emerged, she was wearing different clothes. Police vehicles then drove past without recognising her.

This provides a practical demonstration of the previously revealed system where officers remember a suspect's clothing and appearance.

Jason and Lucia Can Split Up During an Escape

ZEIT also witnessed Jason and Lucia separate after robbing a jewellery store.

Rather than remaining together throughout the entire escape, the pair split up while police searched for them.

Other previews have revealed that GTA 6's wanted system can track both protagonists separately, allowing them to use different escape routes and tactics after committing crimes together.

Jewellery Stores Can Be Robbed Outside Traditional Missions

During another demonstration, Jason and Lucia put on rubber masks and entered a jewellery store armed with pistols.

Jason controlled the shop employees while Lucia collected necklaces and other valuables.

They also discovered a safe in a back room but were unable to find its combination before approaching police sirens forced them to abandon the attempt.

The sequence was designed to demonstrate how an activity that might traditionally be presented as a carefully scripted GTA mission can instead emerge naturally from the open world.

Stolen Cars Can Have Trackers

Jason and Lucia stole a vehicle while escaping from the jewellery robbery, only to discover that the car contained a tracker.

The pair were therefore forced to abandon the vehicle and continue their escape on foot.

Other previews have revealed that GTA 6's vehicles can feature different security systems, including trackers, alarms and electronic locking systems, making some cars significantly more complicated to steal and keep.

Jason and Lucia's Bodies Change According to Their Lifestyle

GTA 6's fitness and weight systems were again demonstrated during ZEIT's preview.

Activities such as cycling can cause Jason and Lucia to lose weight, while strength exercises including pull-ups can increase their muscle mass.

The protagonists' appearance therefore changes dynamically depending on how the player chooses to eat and exercise.

Protein Shakes Improve the Effects of Exercise

Food and drinks can also interact with GTA 6's fitness systems rather than simply restoring health.

ZEIT reports that consuming a protein shake after exercising can increase the effectiveness of a workout.

This adds another layer to the game's lifestyle system, which tracks diet, exercise and their effect on the protagonists' physical appearance.

Jason Can Develop a Belly

The effects of GTA 6's weight system were visibly noticeable during the demonstration.

ZEIT observed Jason beginning to develop a slight belly, demonstrating that weight gain can produce visible changes to the characters' bodies.

Your Phone Includes Health and Vehicle Apps

Jason and Lucia's smartphones act as a central interface for several of GTA 6's systems.

ZEIT mentions messaging, photographs and short videos alongside a dedicated health application.

Players can also use the phone to request a vehicle, while other previews have revealed banking, social media and fitness-related functionality.

Social Media Can Lead You to Activities

GTA 6's in-game social media isn't purely decorative.

Posts and videos appearing through the protagonists' phones can direct players towards activities and events happening elsewhere in Leonida.

This allows Rockstar to use GTA 6's fictional social networks as another way of encouraging exploration rather than relying entirely on traditional map markers.

Vehicles Act as Mobile Weapon Storage

GTA 6 significantly changes the way weapons are carried compared with previous games.

Rather than keeping an enormous arsenal permanently available on the character, vehicles can be used as mobile weapon storage.

Nelson compared the system to the horse inventory used in Red Dead Redemption 2, where players must think about which equipment they want to take with them before leaving their transport behind.

Rockstar Wants Vice City to React to Everything You Do

The recurring theme throughout ZEIT's demonstration was Rockstar's attempt to make Leonida react naturally to the player's behaviour.

NPCs respond to clothing, weapons and criminal behaviour, witnesses provide information to police, surveillance footage can identify suspects and changing appearance can affect whether officers recognise them.

Even optional robberies are designed to emerge naturally from locations and systems already operating in the world rather than always being activated through traditional mission markers.

Rockstar's objective appears to be creating a city that doesn't simply provide a backdrop for the player's actions, but actively notices, remembers and responds to them.
