Rockstar Could Spend $1.2 Million Advertising GTA 6 Across Miami
Rockstar Games could advertise GTA 6 across downtown Miami in the weeks surrounding its launch, with a new proposal allowing huge promotional displays costing up to $1.2 million.
Rockstar Games could advertise GTA 6 throughout downtown Miami in the weeks surrounding the game's November 19 launch, with a new proposal potentially seeing the company spend more than $1.2 million on six promotional banners.
The City of Miami is considering temporarily relaxing its usual signage restrictions to allow GTA 6 banners, building wraps and other promotional displays throughout its urban core.
If approved, the special advertising period would run from October 15 until December 31, 2026, giving GTA 6 a major presence in the real-life city that inspired Vice City before, during and after the game's launch.
GTA 6 Advertising Could Cost Rockstar $1.2 Million
According to The Miamian, Miami District 2 Commissioner Damian Pardo is sponsoring an ordinance that would allow a maximum of six GTA 6 banners to be displayed within Miami's urban core for 56 days.
Rockstar would reportedly pay the City of Miami $202,000 for each banner, meaning that using all six available locations would cost a total of $1,212,000.
The proposed advertising would be approved by Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two Interactive, according to draft legislation seen by The Miamian.
Downtown homeowner associations would also need to agree to the deal before the banners could be installed.
Miami Recognises the Scale of GTA 6's Launch
The proposed ordinance specifically acknowledges the enormous amount of attention GTA 6 is expected to receive and the close connection between Miami and Rockstar's fictional Vice City.
The legislation states that GTA 6's launch is expected to generate "substantial national and international" attention across media, entertainment and culture.
It argues that the launch provides an opportunity to further promote Miami internationally as a major destination for entertainment, technology, media, tourism and creative industries.
The proposal also cites the "unique international significance" of GTA 6's release and its cultural association with Miami as justification for allowing promotional displays that would ordinarily be restricted under the city's signage regulations.
Rockstar's GTA 6 Marketing Could Fund a Miami Park
The potentially $1.2 million generated by the campaign wouldn't simply be advertising revenue for the city's general budget.
Pardo says the money would instead go towards development of the Upperdeck - Edward T. Graham Heritage Trail, a planned 33-acre public space beneath Miami's new Interstate 395 Signature Bridge.
That creates an unusual arrangement in which Rockstar could effectively help fund a real-world Miami public project while advertising the fictional version of the city featured in GTA 6.
Rockstar and Miami-Dade Are Discussing an Even Bigger GTA 6 Campaign
The downtown advertising proposal is separate from an even more ambitious GTA 6 marketing campaign currently being discussed between Rockstar Games and Miami-Dade County.
As previously reported, Miami-Dade officials have developed proposals that could temporarily transform real-world locations across the county into GTA 6 and Vice City-themed attractions.
Concepts presented to Rockstar include an immersive Vice City arrival experience at Miami International Airport, potentially featuring a display aircraft covered in Vice City branding alongside themed baggage carousels, luggage carts and airport signage.
Other concepts include wrapping Metromover cars in Vice City colours and logos, adding GTA-themed signage to transit stations, installing custom Vice City manhole covers and utility boxes, and creating a Port Gellhorn-inspired installation at PortMiami using shipping containers and other elements of the working waterfront.
Miami-Dade has even suggested a Vice City-inspired public installation at Rickenbacker Beach and a GTA-themed celebration of Miami's car culture at Tropical Park.
A spokesperson for Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava previously confirmed that officials had held "some conversations with Rockstar about potential opportunities around the launch of GTA VI."
However, the spokesperson stressed that "nothing has been formally agreed to or approved" and that any proposal would need to pass the appropriate review and approval process.
Miami-Dade believes its unmistakable influence on GTA 6 could create what officials described as a "unique opportunity" to generate revenue while showcasing the real Miami to GTA's enormous global audience.
Not Everyone in Miami Wants a Vice City Takeover
The scale of the proposed marketing campaign has already attracted opposition from some Miami-Dade officials.
Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz has objected to the idea of using county property to promote Grand Theft Auto, describing it as a franchise "built around criminal activity."
She noted that the games depict crimes including murder, robbery, drug trafficking, carjacking and violence against police — activities that local law enforcement works to prevent.
Miami-Dade Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez has also opposed the county's proposals.
Bermudez argues that promoting Miami as Vice City conflicts with the image the region has worked to establish as a destination for technology and finance.
He said Rockstar has every right to create the game, but questioned why local government should actively use Miami to promote it, adding: "I don't think it's logical."
GTA 6 Could Have a Huge Real-World Presence in Miami
Despite that opposition, the newly revealed City of Miami proposal shows just how substantial Rockstar's real-world marketing campaign could become as GTA 6 approaches release.
If both the city and county proposals ultimately move forward in some form, GTA 6 advertising could appear across downtown buildings, Miami International Airport, public transport, waterfront locations and other prominent areas of Miami.
That would effectively bring Rockstar's Vice City back to the city that inspired it, just as millions of players prepare to explore the fictional version when GTA 6 launches.
The City of Miami proposal is scheduled to go before the Miami City Commission on September 10.
GTA 6 launches for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026.
