GTA 6 Age Rating: ESRB, PEGI & Worldwide Ratings Explained

With the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI approaching, official age ratings for the game have started appearing around the world, providing some additional information about the type of mature content players can expect.

The ESRB has now officially rated GTA VI M for Mature 17+ in North America, while Australia's Classification Board has given the game an R 18+ classification. A PEGI 18 rating is also appearing across European storefronts, although PEGI's own detailed listing was briefly published before subsequently being removed.

Below, we've rounded up the official ratings and content descriptors that have appeared so far, along with an explanation of exactly what each descriptor means.

What's Missing?

  • As GTA VI is advertised as a "Single-Player Game", the ratings understandably exclude the "Users Interact" label.
  • Unlike GTA 5's PS5 release, Grand Theft Auto VI does not currently carry a "Gambling" descriptor. This strongly suggests the base game does not feature player-accessible casino gambling or similar betting mechanics significant enough to warrant the label.

Ratings Breakdown

GTA VI ESRB Rating – Mature 17+

United States and Canada

The Entertainment Software Rating Board has officially classified Grand Theft Auto VI as M for Mature 17+ on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

The ESRB lists the following content descriptors:

  • Blood and Gore
  • Intense Violence
  • Mature Humor
  • Nudity
  • Strong Language
  • Strong Sexual Content
  • Use of Drugs and Alcohol

The listing additionally includes the interactive element:

  • In-Game Purchases

The ESRB defines a Mature 17+ game as containing content generally suitable for players aged 17 and older, which may include intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content and strong language.

What do GTA VI's ESRB descriptors mean?

Blood and Gore – Depictions of blood or the mutilation of body parts.

Intense Violence – Graphic and realistic-looking depictions of physical conflict. May involve extreme and/or realistic blood, gore, weapons and depictions of human injury and death.

Mature Humor – Depictions or dialogue involving "adult" humor, including sexual references.

Nudity – Graphic or prolonged depictions of nudity.

Strong Language – Explicit and/or frequent use of profanity.

Strong Sexual Content – Explicit and/or frequent depictions of sexual behavior, possibly including nudity.

Use of Drugs and Alcohol – The consumption or use of illegal drugs / The consumption of alcoholic beverages.

In-Game Purchases – Contains in-game offers to purchase digital goods or premiums with real world currency, including but not limited to bonus levels, skins, music, virtual coins and other forms of in-game currency, subscriptions, season passes and upgrades (e.g., to disable ads).

Other than missing "Users Interact", the complete ESRB descriptor list is actually identical to that given to Grand Theft Auto V, although the ESRB has not yet published the type of lengthy rating summary that accompanied GTA V and explained specific examples of its mature content.

GTA VI PEGI Rating – PEGI 18

United Kingdom and Europe

GTA VI is also being listed with a PEGI 18 rating across European storefronts.

There is currently a slight complication surrounding the PEGI classification. Some official Xbox Store pages continue to display "PEGI 18 Provisional", while other regional Xbox pages have been updated to display a standard PEGI 18 rating accompanied by the following descriptors:

  • Violence
  • Sex
  • Drugs
  • In-Game Purchases

A detailed Grand Theft Auto VI entry also briefly appeared on PEGI's own website before being removed. Because that page is no longer publicly available, some caution should be exercised when treating its more specific descriptions as final, but the page contained considerably more information about the content PEGI had assessed. A copy of the details is displayed below.

Advice for consumers

**** Please note that the release date for this product remains 19 November 2026. Any other dates provided in relation to this product are for information purposes only and do not represent a change to the confirmed release date. ****

This game has received a PEGI 18 which restricts availability to ADULTS ONLY and is not suitable for persons under 18 years of age. This rating has been given because it features strong graphic violence, strong sexual themes and use of illegal drugs.

Brief outline of the game

Grand Theft Auto VI is an action-adventure game set in an open-world version of the fictional state of Leonida. Players can play from a third-person perspective as either Jason Duval or Lucia Caminos, two criminals who become involved in a criminal conspiracy following a failed robbery. The pair must work together as they become increasingly entangled in criminal activities across the state. Gameplay includes exploring the open world, driving and stealing vehicles, robbing establishments, engaging in combat with non-player characters and participating in high-speed chases with police.

Content specific issues

This game contains frequent depictions of violence; due to the free roam nature of the game the player can harm all other characters inhabiting the environment. This includes civilians, criminals and the authorities. Violence is bloody with a high degree of realism, with certain weapons being able to cause greater damage such as detailed decapitation and dismemberment.

Drug use is frequent and prominent with the player being able to partake in drug use with others and to use illegal drugs directly from their inventory. Most notably, cocaine can be carried around by the player and snorted directly from their hand at any time.

There are also strong sexual themes, including nudity, scenes of intercourse and occasional scenes of sexual fetishes. In various night clubs the player can also pay for private dances, during which, the game allows the player to move their hands onto the dancers' breasts and buttocks.

Other issues

Domestic animals are present in the environment, these can be harmed by the player, however this does not produce the same injury detail that can be generated towards human characters.

The game features frequent strong bad language such as the word “fuck” and occasional use of the word “cunt”. Discriminatory language can be heard in the tv shows and on the radio channels.

This game offers players the opportunity to purchase in-game items. It should be noted that the game can still be played without the need to purchase such items.

What does PEGI 18 mean?

The adult classification is applied when the level of violence reaches a stage where it becomes a depiction of gross violence, apparently motiveless killing, or violence towards defenceless characters. The glamorisation of the use of illegal drugs and of the simulation of gambling, and explicit sexual activity should also fall into this age category.

PEGI Violence

The game contains depictions of violence. In games rated PEGI 7 this can only be non-realistic or non-detailed violence. Games rated PEGI 12 can include violence in a fantasy environment or non-realistic violence towards human-like characters, whereas games rated PEGI 16 or 18 have increasingly more realistic-looking violence.

PEGI Drugs

The game refers to or depicts the use of illegal drugs, alcohol or tobacco. Games with this content descriptor are always PEGI 16 or PEGI 18.

PEGI Sex

This content descriptor can accompany a PEGI 12 rating if the game includes sexual posturing or innuendo, a PEGI 16 rating if there is erotic nudity or sexual intercourse without visible genitals or a PEGI 18 rating if there is explicit sexual activity in the game. Depictions of nudity in a non-sexual context do not require a specific age rating, and this descriptor would not be necessary.

PEGI In-Game Purchases

The game offers players the option to purchase digital goods or services with real-world currency. Such purchases include additional content (bonus levels, outfits, surprise items, music), but also upgrades (e.g. to disable ads), subscriptions to updates, virtual coins and other forms of in-game currency. This content descriptor always appears when in-game content can be purchased. Since June 2026, certain specific features related to in-game purchases have an influence on the age rating.

GTA VI Australian Rating – R 18+

Australia

The Australian Classification Board has officially classified Grand Theft Auto VI R 18+.

The government classification record was issued on August 27, 2026 and lists Rockstar Games as the developer, Rockstar North as the publisher and Take-Two Interactive as the production company.

Its official consumer advice reads:

High impact violence, sex scenes and drug use

The Australian classification matrix identifies three areas as reaching the R 18+ level:

  • Violence – High Impact
  • Drug Use – High Impact
  • Sex – High Impact

The classification record also assesses the game's themes, language and nudity, but these elements are not identified as the principal reasons for the R 18+ classification.

In Australia, an R 18+ classification is legally restricted to adults. The category is used for material considered high in impact and means people under the age of 18 cannot legally purchase the game.

GTA VI New Zealand Rating – R18

New Zealand

New Zealand's Classification Office has officially classified Grand Theft Auto VI R18, restricting the game to people aged 18 and over.

The classification was entered into the register on October 2, 2026 under OFLC reference 2600460.000. The official record identifies the publication specifically as the Grand Theft Auto VI console game, with Rockstar Games listed as its distributor.

The official descriptive note lists:

  • Graphic Violence
  • Drug Use
  • Offensive Language
  • Sex Scenes
  • Nudity

This is broadly consistent with the ESRB, PEGI and Australian classifications, while providing slightly different terminology for the same types of adult content.

GTA VI Singapore / IARC Rating – 18+

Singapore and some digital storefront regions

The Singapore PlayStation Store currently displays an IARC 18+ classification for Grand Theft Auto VI.

Its displayed descriptors are:

  • Discriminatory Language
  • Extreme Violence
  • Nudity
  • Strong Language

The store also separately confirms that in-game purchases are optional.

IARC – the International Age Rating Coalition – provides ratings for digitally distributed games across participating rating systems and storefronts. Its terminology therefore differs somewhat from the descriptors used directly by PEGI and the ESRB.

GTA VI Saudi Arabia Rating – 21+

Saudi Arabia

GTA VI's official Saudi Arabian Xbox Store listing carries a 21 age classification, stating that the game is suitable for players aged 21 and over.

The storefront additionally confirms that GTA VI offers in-app purchases.

Unlike the ESRB listing, the Saudi storefront does not currently provide the same detailed breakdown of violence, sexual content, drugs and language alongside the age badge.

What GTA VI's Ratings Tell Us

While an adult rating for a Grand Theft Auto game was never in doubt, the classifications provide some of the clearest official indications yet of exactly how far Rockstar is taking GTA VI's mature content.

Across the different systems there is a remarkably consistent picture: graphic or high-impact violence, drug use, strong language, nudity and sexual content are all present, while both the ESRB and PEGI systems additionally flag the presence of in-game purchases - which we believe to be a reference to the Ultimate Edition upgrade.

The ESRB's official rating is particularly useful because its seven descriptors exactly match those assigned to Grand Theft Auto V: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content and Use of Drugs and Alcohol.

The Australian classification is somewhat more revealing in terms of severity, specifically identifying violence, drug use and sex as "high impact".

Meanwhile, the detailed PEGI page that was briefly published contained the most specific information of all, with reported references to dismemberment, decapitation, cocaine use and explicit sexual situations. Since PEGI subsequently removed that page and some European storefronts are still showing a provisional classification, those particular details should be treated separately from the ratings and descriptors that remain publicly verifiable.

More classification boards are expected to publish their own GTA VI ratings ahead of the game's release, including ratings for markets such as Germany and Japan. We'll update this page as additional official classifications and detailed rating summaries become available.
