Australia's Fair Work Ombudsman Is Telling Australians How to Take Leave for GTA VI Launch Day

Australia's workplace regulator has jumped on the Grand Theft Auto VI hype train, with an Instagram post about how to get time off for launch day!

The Fair Work Ombudsman, the body that looks after workplace rights in Australia, opens with a simple scenario: GTA VI is out tomorrow, but you've got no paid leave left. Then it asks, "Can you take unpaid leave?"

The slides go through your options under Australia's National Employment Standards, and they've worked GTA VI artwork into the images too. The second slide even uses a screenshot from the extended look trailer.

Carer's leave

You can take up to 2 days of unpaid carer's leave to look after a sick or injured family member. The slide admits they don't think this one will apply.

Emergency service duties

This covers voluntary emergency work like the SES. The slide says "probably not this one either."

Parental leave

You can get up to 12 months of unpaid leave for a new child, but the post is quick to point out that a video game isn't a child.

Still want the day off?

The last slide is the actually useful one. If none of those fit, you can still ask your employer for unpaid leave, but there's no minimum entitlement, so it comes down to whether they agree.

It's aimed at Australian workers, so the rules won't match what applies in the US, UK or elsewhere. Still, it's pretty funny to see a government body getting in on the GTA VI launch day hype.

The post's caption sums it up with a "gentle reminder to get your leave request in sooner rather than later," which is fair enough with the game landing on November 19th.
